Universal Life Insurance in Plano

Universal life gives you permanent coverage with premiums you can adjust as your income and plans change. Before we suggest any policy, we look closely at what you already own, how your budget moves and what your family would need. Then we explain our findings in plain terms.

Permanent coverage you can adjust, explained up front

Universal life is a permanent policy with two working pieces: a death benefit for the person you name and a cash value account that builds over the years. The premium is not locked the way it is with whole life. Within set limits, you can pay extra when money is good, pay less when it is tight, and sometimes raise or lower the death benefit.

People pick it for that flexibility, and that same flexibility is why it needs attention. The insurance charges inside the policy climb as you get older. When cash value is too thin to pay them, a policy can lapse years down the road, usually when new coverage is hardest to get. Each conversation begins with a review of your current coverage and goals, and we show you on paper how a policy would behave before you sign.

Many clients in Plano and nearby Frisco, Allen and Richardson see universal life as the step between term and whole life. It costs more than term yet covers you for life, and it gives more room to adjust than whole life.

What our universal life service covers

A review of what you already have
We read through your current policies, including any group coverage from work, and note the face amounts, beneficiaries and expiration dates. You get a plain summary of where you stand before we talk about anything new.
Choosing the right type of universal life
We explain the differences between a traditional universal life policy, guaranteed universal life with a no-lapse feature and indexed universal life tied to a market index with caps and floors. Each suits a different goal, and we say which one fits yours and why.
Illustrations you can actually read
Policy illustrations can run many pages. We walk through the guaranteed column and the projected column side by side, so you see what happens if credited rates come in lower than hoped.
Death benefit option and beneficiary setup
We help you decide between a level death benefit and an increasing one, and we make sure your beneficiary designations are complete and current.
Ongoing policy check-ins
Universal life should be looked at regularly. We go over your annual statement with you and flag early if the funding level needs attention.

Signs universal life may be the right call

  • Your term policy is ending

If your term life coverage expires in the next few years and you still want protection, universal life can provide lifelong coverage without locking you into a rigid premium.

  • Your income varies from year to year

Business owners, commissioned earners and people with bonuses often like the option to put in more when cash is strong and less when it is tight.

  • You want coverage that lasts for estate planning

A permanent death benefit can help with estate costs, equalize an inheritance or leave a set amount for a beneficiary regardless of when you pass.

  • An older policy is underfunded

If an annual statement shows the cash value shrinking or the projected lapse age creeping closer, it is time for a careful look before the problem grows.

  • Whole life feels too fixed

Some clients like permanent coverage but not a premium they cannot adjust. Universal life is often the middle ground.

What drives the price of universal life

With universal life, the insurer sets part of the cost and you set the rest by deciding how much to put in. Two people of the same age can end up paying quite different amounts for similar coverage. We go through every factor so your quote is easy to follow.

Your age and health rating

The base cost of insurance comes from your age when the policy starts and the rating underwriting gives you. Medical history, medications and tobacco use all factor in.

Size and type of death benefit

A bigger face amount costs more. Choosing an increasing death benefit also costs more than a level one, since the insurer takes on more risk.

Built-in guarantees

A no-lapse guarantee to a set age raises the cost but keeps the policy from running dry. Fewer guarantees lower the premium and lean more on how the cash value performs.

Your funding level

Paying just the minimum keeps today's premium small but can leave the policy short down the road. Paying nearer the target premium builds cash value that helps absorb charges that climb with age.

How we work through it with you

  1. 1

    A first conversation by phone

We ask about your family, your income, your debts and any coverage you already carry. There is no pressure to decide anything on this call.

  2. 2

    Review and plain findings

We study your existing policies and your goals, then tell you what we found: gaps, overlaps, coverage that is about to expire and anything that looks underfunded. Sometimes the honest answer is that you need less than you thought, or that term life fits better.

  3. 3

    Comparing policies side by side

If universal life makes sense, we compare options and explain the premium range, the guarantees and the assumptions behind each illustration.

  4. 4

    Application and underwriting

We help you complete the application and prepare for underwriting, which may include health questions, a short medical exam and a review of records. We keep you updated until the policy is issued and then review the final contract with you.

Common questions about universal life

What separates universal life from whole life?

Whole life locks in the premium and grows cash value on a guaranteed schedule. With universal life you can change what you pay, and sometimes the death benefit, while cash value earns a rate the insurer declares or links to an index. The added flexibility means the policy needs more attention from you.

Is it possible for a universal life policy to lapse?

It is. When cash value runs too low to pay the monthly insurance charges and fees, coverage can stop. Guaranteed universal life with a no-lapse feature prevents that, provided the required premium is paid. We go over your statements with you so any shortfall shows up early.

Can I take money out of the cash value?

Most policies permit loans and partial withdrawals. A loan charges interest, and whatever stays unpaid comes out of the death benefit. Taking a withdrawal in the first years can also set off surrender charges, so we walk through the effects before any money comes out.

Will there be a medical exam?

In many cases, particularly for bigger face amounts. Other policies rely on health questions and records. We let you know what to expect for the amount you have in mind.

Is it worth replacing my older universal life policy?

Not by default. A replacement can bring fresh surrender charges and underwriting at today's age. We look over the existing policy first and tell you directly whether to keep it, change the funding or replace it.
